Sometimes the subject, story or content just isn’t appealing. However, other times it may be hard to read not because of the subject, but simply the visual appearance. The way the text has been set out on the page, the fonts used and their size, the spacing, margins, chapter headings, footnotes, ledding (space above and below the text) and other formatting essentials, all contribute to the readability of a book.
How much more enjoyable a good story can become when the text flows and the words seem to jump out off the page – it’s hard to put down isn’t it?
If you are publishing your own book and considering the layout yourself, why not submit a couple of pages to our art department before completing the entire manuscript. You might find that we have some helpful hits to make the book look just the way you intended. If you find you need more help, our art department can design and layou the book for you, or if you’d like to do this yourself but just need a bit of guidance, we’ll provide a template for you to work from.
