The House of Furness
Herbert Stott Furness, a talented musician, and his family arrived in South Australia in 1892 from Yorkshire to immediately commence piano tuning, which developed into hand manufacturing of H.S. Furness & Son pianos in 1908.
As Furness Ltd, SA’s first piano makers, they mechanised the process to make Furness Pianos at their Edwardstown factory from 1925. Diversification led to making Furness Caravans from 1935, being the second manufacturer of caravans in Australia, while at the same time, using their unique wood process, also manufactured doors.
All five sons were employed at Furness Ltd continuing the excellence of manufacturing by the firm until 1980.
