The fifth edition of the Medicines Book for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners (Medicines Book) has been produced as part of the suite of Remote Primary Health Care Manuals (RPHCM), through a collaboration between the Central Australian Rural Practitioners Association, Central Australian Aboriginal Congress, CRANAplus and Flinders University.
The other manuals in the suite are the CARPA Standard Treatment Manual (CARPA STM), Minymaku Kutju Tjukurpa Women’s Business Manual (WBM), and the Clinical Procedures Manual for remote and rural practice (CPM).
The Medicines Book is
- An illustrated, plain English medicines reference book
- Designed to be used by clinicians, especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners and nurses who supply and monitor medicines, and want to share information on medicines with people who may have low levels of English literacy
- Covers medicines recommended in the CARPA STM, the WBM and other medicines commonly used in remote primary health care centres
The Medicines Book does not stand alone, and does not claim to be fully comprehensive as it has been simplified for ease of use. It is intended to supplement other medicine reference books such as the Australian Medicines Handbook (AMH), Therapeutic Guidelines and MIMS. Dosage and prescribing guidelines have not been included. Refer to the CARPA STM, WBM, or your medicine reference book for these.
