History
Two Lives in Adelaide in the 1840’s
$30
In 1836 a young English seamstress named Maria Gandy arrived in Adelaide. She was accompanying Colonel William Light, surveyor general of the new colony of South Australia, and was to remain with him until he died in 1839. He described her as his housekeeper, history has assumed she was his mistress. Another early colonist was a surgeon named George Mayo, who came in 1837 – and went home again, almost by return of ship. However, he must have liked what he saw, as he returned in 1839, and married Maria in 1840. This book attempts to recover what we can of their lives together, and describe the Adelaide they lived in.
