Yaka – an Andu Story
$17
Andu is the name for Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby in the language of Adnyamathanha, the First Nations people of the Northern Flinders Ranges. 200 years ago Andu were very common. Some were collected and brought to Adelaide Zoo.
In the first half of the 1990s an idea was conceived to re-introduce Zoo bred (Adelaide & Monarto Zoos) Andu to a traditional wild setting. Aroona Sanctuary near Leigh Creek was chosen.
Yaka, an Andu born on the sanctuary, uses some Adnyamathanha words to tell how the project developed to become an internationally recognised leader in conservation programs. Now many Andu thrive in their yarta; the country they belong to.
