OBH shares practical advice – key takeaways from the panel!
During October, OBH was proud to join Writers SA for an insightful discussion on self-publishing. Tracy Coad, one of our publication specialists, shared practical advice for Indie Authors looking to bring their stories to life. Here are six of the most popular questions she answered during the session which are also covered in our free, comprehensive guide to self-publishing, “From Passion to Publication”.
- What are the most common mistakes first-time authors make?
Supplying low-res images not suitable for print, missing preliminary pages (title, copyright, contents), skipping having their manuscript professionally edited, and setting up manuscripts in the wrong size (rather than desired book size). - How should authors prepare their manuscript files?
- Format your manuscript in Microsoft Word at the exact size you plan to print the book.
- Arrange the pages so they resemble the finished layout, including headings, body text, and image placement.
- When you’re ready, export the file as a press-ready PDF, making sure fonts are embedded and margins are correct.
- Provide all images separately as high-resolution JPEG or PDF files at 300 dpi for the best print quality.
- The cover artwork should also be supplied as a separate file, not embedded in the manuscript.
- What are the advantages of short-run and bulk printing – how many books should an author be prepared to print?
Digital printing is the most cost-effective for small print runs. The best value is when printing 200+ copies. - What advantages does local printing/distribution offer?
Faster turnaround – no overseas freight times, higher quality control with physical proofs you can check personally, personal support and investing in our local economy. - Beyond printing, how can authors ensure their book sells?
Create buzz on social media, take pre-orders, lodge your publication with the National Library, and network through Writers Centres such as Writers SA, advertise in industry publications. - Where is self-publishing heading in the next 5–10 years?
More digital-first strategies, growth in Indie Author communities, and ongoing evolution in digital print technology.
